Mary,   You can include calc fields in the Grouping area of a report, see below. The problem you may run into is if the calculated field is working with multiple choices then the grouping will show every combination used by users.    

Lisa,   If you have a task report (or even within a project plan view) if you click on the Predecessor you're able to see the information you're describing, such as the task name, the planned start and end dates of that item.  Within that dialog view you can click the predecessor heading (Task 3...)...

Morgan, There is no global setting or way to change this, it is how the product works and has worked for quite some time.  Does seem to be an oversight on how it was built but there is no way to stop someone from going backward to log hours if they felt like it.
