Authors: Devon Govett, Danielle Robinson, and Matthew Deutsch Adobe has more than 5,000 engineers working across the world on hundreds of products, which must all meet high standards for UI consistency, accessibility, internationalization, and usability. Meeting these standards at our scale has been a challenge for us. We acknowledge design systems are now more popular than ever, and many companies both large and small are implementing their own component libraries from scratch. Even with the rise of the modern view libraries, it is still extraordinarily difficult to do so in a fully accessible way with interactions that work across many types of devices. This represents millions of dollars of investment for each company as they duplicate work that could have been shared. Additionally, many companies and teams don’t have the resources or time to prioritize features like accessibility, internationalization, full keyboard navigation, and touch interactions. This leads to many apps havin
Authors: Eric Knee and Jody Arthur Learn how Adobe Experience Platform combines both streaming and batch data into one data workflow that supports both analytical and operational workloads, reducing complexity and eliminating latency to deliver real-time personalized experiences at scale. Adobe Experience Platform is rapidly transforming the way brands interact with their customers with an open, intelligent, and real-time platform for customer experience. The ability to extensible, and holistic platform capable of combining data across the enterprise to power real-time profiles enhanced through experience intelligence and governance, and activates these profiles to deliver real-time personalized experiences at scale. This has been very challenging for enterprises. Most maintain their customer data in separate analytical and operational systems (Figure 1). Their data is constantly moving between these systems incurring latency, inaccuracies, and not able to respond to the ever-increasi
Authors: Bianca Tesila, Nicolae-Valentin Ciobanu, and Jenny Medeiros This is the second of a two-part series in which we explore how to build and roll out data-intensive applications to production using Akka Streams. In this follow-up post, we outline a few key features that we implement for efficient streaming activation within Adobe Experience Platform, along with a use-case that shows these features in action. In part one of this Akka Streams series, we presented a simplified version of an Adobe Real-Time Customer Platform application that continuously fetches profile updates from an Apache Kafka topic and dispatches them as HTTP requests to an endpoint. By the end of the post, we had defined our stages, types, and fault handling. The next logical step would be to roll out this Akka Streams application in production, except we first need to ensure the application meets the three acceptance criteria laid out in our previous post: Asynchrony: streamline performance and use computing
Author: Namit Gupta Observability is a buzzword in the enterprise software industry. Conceptually, Observability is not new. This concept has been borrowed from the world of Engineering and Control Systems. Observability, by definition, is the ability to measure the internal state of a Software System based on the previous output obtained from it. Observability demystified Observability assumes greater significance in the backdrop of the adoption of decoupled system architecture like Microservices. It is imperative to deploy state of the art instrumentation to gauge the properties of an application and its performance as elaborate distributed systems evolve across the delivery pipeline and into production. Observability importance in Adobe Experience Platform Adobe Experience Platform is a powerful, flexible, and open system on the market for building and managing complete solutions that drive customer experience. Authors: Bianca Tesila, Nicolae-Valentin Ciobanu, and Jenny Medeiros This is the first of a two-part series in which we explore how to build and roll out data-intensive applications to production using Akka Streams. In this first post, we focus on our challenges and learnings while setting up a resilient Akka Streams application capable of running at an enterprise scale. Adobe Real-time Customer Data Platform is a service built on Adobe Experience Platform to help companies stitch known and unknown data into comprehensive customer profiles. They can then activate those profiles to deliver personalized experiences in real-time. As customers interact with companies through a growing number of channels and devices, Adobe Experience Platform receives a tremendous amount of data every second. With most of this data entering in different formats and at an unpredictable throughput (i.e. from 10,000 events per second to one million events per second), our systems were under immense strain and
Authors: Eric Knee, Klaasjan Tukker, and Jody Arthur To truly understand how Adobe Experience Platform’s Real-time Customer Profile helps enterprises develop an accurate 360-degree view of their customers, one must first understand Adobe Experience Platform’s Experience Data Model (XDM). This post will provide insights into XDM and its relationship to Real-time Customer Profile to help you more intuitively use Adobe Experience Platform to deliver personalized customer experiences in real-time. Delivering good customer experiences depends on having a full and accurate profile of your customer. Adobe Experience Platform makes that possible. However, the first step in building a profile is understanding the data you have to work with. Data comes from a myriad of sources and in many different formats making it a challenge for enterprises to use it to their full advantage when developing their profiles. Adobe Experience Platform eliminates this problem with its Experience Data Model (XDM),
Start your holiday “wish list” As a former marketing project manager for a creative team, this time of year always felt like a mad dash to the finish line. If you’re in the midst of this holiday-prep madness now, let me share one of my favorite system admin tips: take notes. ‚úèÔ∏è Grab a trusty notebook, set up a document on your desktop, a draft in your email inbox ‚Äì whatever works best for you. Just make sure it’s quick and easy to get to. Then, keep a list of all the things you’d love to improve, but don’t have the time for. Sitting in a meeting that could’ve been an email? Answering that same question about Workfront again? Building another project from scratch? This became my holiday “wish list.” As the end of the year approached, campaigns were launched and everyone started to take their much-earned vacations, I’d look at my list and evaluate ‚Äì what would save me and the team the most time in the new year? Or make the next busy season a bit better? Is there a report

A question recently cropped up about adding the lang tag to the <html> element in a Marketo email — as the W3C has long recommended — but making the language a variable instead of a static value set in the template. If you’re going to include lang, this flexibility makes sense, for sure. (Not convinced recipients’ mail clients care about the lang[1], but there’s no doubt it should be in your HTML for standards’ sake.) So the person was trying this: <!DOCTYPE html> <html lang="${emailLanguage}"> <head> <meta class="mktoString" default="en-us" id="emailLanguage" mktomodulescope="false" mktoname="Email Language" /> <meta class="mktoString" default="" id="emailTitle" mktomodulescope="false" mktoname="Email Title" /> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> <meta content="width=device-width, minimal-ui, initial-scale=1.0, maximum-scale=1.0, user-scalable=0;" name="viewport" /> <meta name="robots" conte
Creating your first servlet in AEM Forms by Adobe Docs Abstract Sling Servlet A Servlet is a class used to extend the capabilities of servers that host applications accessed by means of a request-response programming model. For such applications, Servlet technology defines HTTP-specific servlet classes. All servlets must implement the Servlet interface, which defines life-cycle methods. A servlet in AEM can be registered as OSGi service: you can extend SlingSafeMethodsServlet for read-only implementation or SlingAllMethodsServlet in order to implement all RESTful operations. Can we implement it the same way we do it for normal AEM website in AEM 6.3 by creating dictionary and using @i18n directives while content authoring/component html file? Adobe Target: Response Token and Debugging approach *Originally posted on Medium by our fellow Adobe Target Community member @jayakrish (LinkedIn: Jayakrishnaa Pharthasarathy) on Feb 26 5 min read Objective: To understand and explore the debugging areas on the adobe target for the certain parameters using the response tokens features. Story: Earlier days there was a concept called “plug-ins” in adobe target where they had used to debug and validate the activities wherever it takes place with help of the ttMeta JavaScript object, it is exclusively for the mbox call. Adobe has also announced the sunset date for mbox call and automatically this feature will deprecate along with mbox sunset. Generally, mbox.js did not let other JavaScript code that runs on the page know what happens behind the scenes. With the improvement of at.js (with the concept of response tokens), we had a unique opportunity to fix this issue. Therefore, here we come

AEM micro-optimization (part 4) – define allowed templates by Jörg Hoh Abstract This time I want to discuss a different type of micro-optimization. It’s not something you as a developer can implement in your code, but it’s rather a question of the application design, which has some surprising impact. I came across it when I recently investigated poor performance in the Siteadmin navigation. And although I did this investigation in AEM as a Cloud Service, the logic on AEM 6.5 behaves the same way. When you click in the siteadmin navigation through your pages, AEM collects a lot of information about pages and folders to display them in the proper context. For example, when you click on page with child pages, it collects information what actions should be displayed if a specific child node is going to be selected (copy, paste, publish, …) An important information is if the “Create page” action should be made available. And that’s the thing I want to outline in this article. Assuming t
