I, too, have spent many office hours solo. Here's what I've done to improve attendance:

  • Agree: Consistently scheduling the time is key.
  • I have two time slots to accommodate colleagues in other time zones. You might need more.
  • Directly add people to the meeting invite. I let them know it's completely optional, but no one ever opted into office hours when they were configured to sign-up only.
  • Set a quick topic and advertise it. I've never been diligent with this, but others have and I see their attendance is better.
