Assuming your first field, "DE:Story Lead" is a typeahead field using User as the Referenced Object Type, you could set up your calculated field to just be    {DE:Story Lead}.{lastName}   And it should return just the last name of the user selected.    

Workfront isn't really set up to "count" through reporting. Because issues are a collection of tasks, you won't be able to get a record count of them. This is likely something that will be best addressed by support, as they can review the email logs specific to your user. Often times there is a block that happens with spam filters.

You need to lowercase the "valueexpression".   Additionally, the custom fields should maintain their formatting as they are setup in your system likely with spaces like this:   valueexpression=WEEKDAYDIFF({DE:Predication End}, {DE:Predication Start})  

Support is really your best option for bugs.   For ideas on enhancements or functionality, I would put those in the idea forum to get voted on. There are likely several already in place regarding the widgets on the home page and admin functionality.
