We did a step challenge one year - about this time of year! Anyone who wanted to participate had a weekly task with a custom form attached where they logged their weekly steps and closed their task. Then we had a chart report to track who was in the lead.

I actually just did this for the first time this afternoon. I added a number to the estimation field and when I refreshed the task, that same number is in the Planned Hours field. Oh, wait. I was not using dynamic boards - that could be the difference.

If you're OK with just the totals, you can do that in the report setup - select 'Sum' in the 'Summarize this column by' dropdown and the totals will show on your grey grouping lines - as long as these are number (or currency) fields. If they are text fields you won't have that Summarize by option.
