I have a Proof Approval report and I'm trying to add an additional column to display a preview (large thumbnail) of the document. I'm hoping it's not too many jumps to get from proof approval to document version to document large thumbnail.

Make sure the user has contribute access to the project instead of manage. You can edit their permissions further by selecting the Advanced Settings drop-down and deselect options. Please note this does not work for Project Owners as the Owner should be able to manage the project fully.

The easiest way I've found is if you navigate to the Users list and select the person's account. From there you can select Remind user to register from the more menu. This only works for users with Unregistered icon next to their name.
