Should the most recent assets uploaded appear in the assets side panel?

I seem to recall that when I used to upload a group of images from my desktop to the DAM, those images would then appear in the Assets left-hand side panel for easy use. They would stay in the left-hand panel somebody uploaded a newer set of images. Was I hallucinating? What determines which images show up by default in that left-hand panel?
