How did you learn Text Mode Language

Avatar

Level 2
how and where did you learn the commands and code used in text mode? Does anyone have a library they have created over time they can share. I am not a hardcore coder, although I am getting more and more experience everyday.

Hi Karl, Maybe some others have some cool resources, but I started with the 3 day Advanced Reporting Workshop that Workfront provides. I still use the book they give you to download for referencing things. So even if someone has a cool, all inclusive manual or something, I would recommend taking that class. It's very well done.

Wish I had a more elegant answer than the truth: I come from a programming background (which helps), took the WF classes, kept some of the key downloaded PowerPoint decks as reference, poke around alot on my own, bang my head against the desk now and again, use the API Explorer, look through all the cool tricks our implementation specialist left behind, scour the help area, ask our WSA (and then check out their cool tricks), ask Support, ask for help here, then go home and pretend Workfront doesn't exist. ;-p Biggest problem I have is that despite being a Workfront SysAdmin could easily be a full-time job with everything there is to learn, it's really not the only responsibility I have in my position, so getting tricks to stick in my head and gaining that inbuilt holistic knowledge of Workfront has just proven to be impossible thus far. So...I muddle, professionally. ;-) Kevin Quosig

I"ve done the Advanced Reporting Class and attended Leap this year. It feels as if you get the structure by taking the class and get all of the cool stuff from Leap. Also, something that"s been helping a lot lately is Nayrum"s WF-Pro livestreams which are on the Youtubes. Extremely helpful. But I"m in the same boat; I wish Workfront put out an advanced advanced reporting class, or at least a more voluminous book on reporting.

I'm actually taking the Workfront Advanced Reporting course right now and I highly recommend it. Its giving me a few insights that just poking around Workfronts training area didn't give me. Aileen Taylor Cell Signaling Technology

Yep, that pretty much sums up my history and process as well : muddle, flounder, wiggle, etc. While my old COBOL skills don't really come in handy, the programmer logic that was instilled definitely helps.

Like others, I took the advance reporting course, attended Leap conferences, and find Narayan"s wf-pro site to be invaluable. My company also gained access to some WF remote consulting hours, so I got 1:1 tutoring with it (not only on reporting but sometimes on best way to set up a process). Lastly, the Community forum taught me a lot and continues to teach me a lot. I find myself searching through the archives regularly, looking for bits of code. If all else fails, I"ll post a question.

Similar to everyone else, I took the Advanced Reporting classes, and I refer back (many a time) to the reference guide that they provided in conjunction with the course. I have also spent many hours over the past years, figuring out by trial and error how to get something to work via text mode (not having a programmer background). And, I've gleaned quite a bit of VERY helpful information from other people's text mode tips and tricks in the Community (of which I usually learn something new every week). Also, as Skye mentioned, Narayan's WFPro site is extremely helpful as well, and I refer back to that a lot as well. Terry Hynd EBSCO Information Services

Same here - the Advanced Reporting course & the materials provided, another shout out to @Narayan Raum & the WF-Pro site, and the very knowledgeable Community! I also have this link bookmarked and reference it often: Understanding Common Uses of Text Mode

Old timer here. I came with some computing background but text mode was quite different from any coding I've done previously. I learned mostly through the community in the early years. Shout out to Melinda Layten, David Cornwell and Doug who provided code in the early days. Once I've picked up a couple of text mode samples and the API explorer, it became clearer. While I did take the courses, they were not too helpful for me. What helped was seeing the actual code I needed so I could piece how things worked. I've moved off from text mode since we're now mostly stable and most of my stuff is now automated with API. I come back to the community if I couldn't find what I needed in the API explorer and hoping somebody has done what I'm now looking for. Polly Co

Hi Karl, I agree with everyone here. I have a few favorite links and documents that might be useful to aggregate here for you/everyone: WF Pro: https://wf-pro.com/ Shout out to @Narayan Raum Wildcard Filter Variables: https://one.workfront.com/s/article/Wildcard-Filter-Variables-810113772 Custom View, Filter, And Grouping Samples: https://one.workfront.com/s/article/Custom-View-Filter-and-Grouping-Samples-12297304 Using Conditional Formatting: https://one.workfront.com/s/article/Using-Conditional-Formatting-in-Text-Mode-1570200200 ‚Some of the attachments might look old (eg: "AtTask"), but the code still works. Also, when in doubt, just post your question to All-Discussions group and use the "Reporting" tag/topic. This is an amazing community of people happy to help. Regards, Brian
