How can I create a drop-down menu for in-line editing at the task level based on fields in a custom form?

Our team is using ad hoc task functionality for some of our projects and once the task is added to the project, we would like them to be able to add details to the task based on information within a task custom form. We have seen that you can create a drop-down menu within a task for in-line editing (based on custom form fields), but we have not been able to get it to work.

Just make sure the users that are trying to do this have access to edit a custom form (and are assigned to the task). If so, they should be able to in-line edit the values.

The custom for should also auto-attach. All you really need to do is be sure that the fields you need are in a view, then the first form with that field shoudl auto-attach to the task and all should be good. As Greg mentioned, be sure that the user has appropriate access to the task and the custom form. They'll need at least contribute access to the task in question and make sure that the checkbox for Edit Custom Forms is checked (it should be by default for contribute or manage access).
