Bulk rename tasks?

We have a lot of repeated tasks in our project templates - it would be really useful to be able to bulk select and rename them in one go. For example, we might have a set of tasks such as: Copy production - blog post 1 Design - blog post 1 Setup - blog post 1 And if we want to add another piece of content into the project, we would copy those tasks and then rename them, e.g: Copy production - blog post 2 Design - blog post 2 Setup - blog post 2 or Copy production - eguide Design - eguide Setup - eguide At the moment we are just manually going through each task and changing the names, but this can be pretty time consuming if it's a large project. Does anyone know if there is a way to bulk rename tasks? Would anybody else find this useful? Stephanie Mulrooney Tomorrow People

Hey Stephanie, I don't think that you can bulk edit to rename tasks. What we do is set up templates to apply to our projects with the task names already broken out. It helps reduce the time it takes for our Project Managers to set up all the actual tasks. They can easily delete/rename tasks as well as assign users. If you go to the "Project" tab, click on "Templates" and "+ Add New Template" you can set up your template and when you're finished, you can easily apply it to any project you wish. In your project, click on "Project Actions" and click on "Attach Template". Hope this helps! Brooke Vaughan Rockfish Interactive Corporation

Hi Stephanie, Yes, this would be helpful. We use templates but our users request that we include the project name as part of each task so on their dashboard calendar it is faster to find which project the task matches. We would like to be able to bulk edit a portion of the task name, if it can't be done from the template level. For example- 'Design ebook' would become design ebook Hoping this functionality exists and we just need to learn how to use it! Thanks for starting the discussion. Dianne Keohane Globoforce

hi Stephanie, I think I would ask @Vic Alejandro if the example he showed in his LEAP presentation (new employee API) would be applicable here. If so, then probably the answer to your question is that you can bulk rename through the API in some manner. -skye

Hello, Well there could be a few of ways to solve this. I'll start with the simplest – can you created a project template that already has the highest number of task groups (or a strong average) and then when you create a new project with the template you can simply do a bulk delete of the ones you don't need? The more difficult would be using the API because it assumes you use the API to begin with, and that you have it configured in a way to allow this. But yes Skye is correct, we have coded a way in our API to use the form selections to create a project (from a template) and then only keep the tasks we need to keep. In your case you would have a field in the custom request form to ask how many iterations you need (i.e. 1-10). And in the API code (and the code we place in the template tasks) it would remove the iterations of tasks you don't need. Based on what I know of your dilemma I'd use one of those two approaches (depending on how frequently I have to do this). But let me know if I'm missing another variable in your scenario. Hello All I'm looking for the answer on something very similar - renaming tasks in a bulk, however my scenario is that we've named a task with one user group and keep using it in the template and projects and now would like to align the naming with the second group of users. Hence, we would like to rename all existing tasks with the name XYZ to ABC. Templates are already aligned for the future projects, but I cannot find the way to rename tasks in existing projects. I have about 10 tasks with the same name within a single project, and about 20 projects applicable for this change. Maybe you have some ideas how to manage it? Thank you! Marta Marta

Hi Marta, For 200 Tasks in total, manually renaming the Tasks is likely the best approach. For larger volumes or periodic Template refreshes, I invite you to consider our "http://store.atappstore.com/product/excel-updater/">Excel Updater and "http://store.atappstore.com/product/sync-template/">Sync Template solutions, respectively.
