Yes , this should be possible. As long as you have .json available for your CF, you can render data using custom logic dynamically.

what is your payload , link sharing some assets or single asset with all renditions ? Is it on author - which version ? Are u trying to use link share ?

You only have few metadata on which you can sort OOTB on author . For sorting on any other filter , you would need customization.  Check logic here : /libs/granite/ui/components/shell/collectionpage/viewsettings  

Metadata updates usually won't update last modified OOTB. Check workflow launchers on AEM version you are using. For eg. on cloud you would see below launcher disabled ootb .You can enable it if you want to track metadata modifications but please be aware that this may impact performance as metadata...

Can you not offload search operation to an external serach engine ? Do you also see the same issue on author instance in search admin filter as well if you use same facet or other predicates as below?

In addition to AEM Desktop app , you could try download directly on folder level as well if all assets in one place. If it is a distributed set of assets you could use search filter and then do a select all and download (Assuming you have enough disk space on local) or even package manager .

We ended up using 'AEM ACS Commons' process step called Replicate with Options , that can accept folder as payload , create a single workflow instance and activate all assets / sub assets. I think this can be a potential solution - I kind of like it, unless you think there is any challenge .Review task capability is a good OOTB option can work for an assets on folder/ asset collection but not each asset one by one....
