Thank you for the suggestion. I tried it out and could not get it to work as I would have hoped for unfortunately. 

We love to use shared columns in our reports but need to be able to take the same format and export it into Excel. Has anyone been able to successfully export a report with shared columns into Excel or found any workarounds? Thank you in advance.

Yes, you can create a custom form and have a custom form field asking "Is this and internal or external project?" and have the person filling out the form answer this question.
