Required fields and empty messages

Hey guys, another question for your expertise.

I have selected the options on the object palette which say user entered- required for a number of fields: a date field and 2 time fields. and then an empty message to display if no data is entered...

yet when i save and run the form, i can click into those cells, not enter any data, move onto the next cell and it doesnt display the empty message.

any idea what im doing wrong?

How do you submit the data? I am having the same issue, and I am using an email button.
