How can I use XLIFF to help with form translation?

I know nothing about how to do use XLIFF to aid in getting form translated into other languages. I am researching this as part of a project to see if this will work. But all I have found in articles about how to use XLIFF with LiveCycle Designer seem to assume that people reading the article know how to do it. What I want to know is,

1. What tools do I need besides LiveCycle Designer ES.

2. How do I get the .xdp files into a format that I can bring into an editor, do the translation then get it back into an .xdp so I can open it in LiveCycle Designer again.

3. Who can I talk to about this?

So far I'm not getting any help on any inquires I have posted on other forums. I just want to learn how this works and how to do it.

There is a good post about this topic on John Brinkman's blog called FormFeed. Here is a link to the article:

Here is a scenerio.

1. Saved the English form as a .xdp file with XLIFF tags in place.

2. Opened the xdp file in Oxygen and ran the transform on it.

3. Now what? Open the file in Word and do the translation work? Open it in an XLIFF editor?

4. Bring it back into Oxygen and run the transform to put everything back into an xdp that I can open in LiveCycle Designer and make any adjustments to field widths, heights, or postions that may need to be made.

I don't normally work with XML but everyone else who does uses Oxygen to work with the XML and transforms etc.

Our Translation deparment I was told perfers to use Word for translation work.

So I am still wondering what it takes to get LiveCycle Designer forms translated into other languages. Right now I am doing form in other languages by taking a copy of the English form and copy/pasteing from an XML file that I am given using the XML tab in LiveCycle Designer. Hardly an efficient way to do it but that is the only way I know how at the moment. The XML file is really set up to work with InDesign which is what is used for most of the work done.

I am hoping someone from Adobe reads these forums and will see this and respond to help me learn what to do and what it takes to get forms from LiveCycle Designer out to translators.

Thanks for responding. Yes I have read this article and tried working with the samples but I can't see how that helps with my forms. The samples seem to work fine as samples go. Still looking.

I finally got an s2x file by running the transform in Saxon9he XSLT Processor using the directions in the Adobe document Using XLIFF for translating Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES form designs.

The instructions state that s2x file is the file to send to be translated. What is an s2x file opened in so it can be translated?

I had high hopes for this but now I'm not sure.

The search goes on.

Steven,

It's been a while since you were looking into this, but at our agency, we are using LiveCycle forms and translating them into Spanish using Deja Vu X3. At first, I didn't understand how a CAT tool like DVX3 was going to handle an xdp file created in LiveCycle. DVX3 has a way of creating filters for files, and it allows you to use the same file in LiveCycle (in xdp) to create this filter. Once you have the filter, you use it in your project settings within DVX3 to process the LiveCycle form like any other file. The translator finishes translating into the given language and then exports the file from DVX3 and it will give you the xdp file which can be easily opened in LiveCycle.

So in DVX3, its not a lot of steps once you have set up the filter. 1. you import the xdp file 2. translate it and edit (whatever process is used for completing a translation) 3. export the file and you'll get the xdp.

Hope you were able to work it out.
