Loss of quality of Smart Crop videos

Avatar

We use the Smart Crop Video preset. Our problem is the loss of quality in our videos, which become blurred.

Video specifications:
4k
MP4 H.264
30 FPS

You can find an example video here:

Are there any settings to avoid a loss of quality?

Many thanks and best regards
Robin

Hi @RobinBl1 ,

When using the Smart Crop Video preset in AEM, there are a few settings you can adjust to minimize the loss of quality in your videos:

1. **Bitrate**: Increase the bitrate of your videos to ensure a higher quality output. Higher bitrates result in larger file sizes but can help maintain the visual fidelity of the video. You can experiment with different bitrate values to find the right balance between quality and file size.

2. **Resolution**: Ensure that the resolution of your videos matches the desired output resolution. If the output resolution is significantly lower than the input resolution, it can result in a loss of quality. Consider resizing or cropping the video before applying the Smart Crop Video preset to match the desired output resolution.

3. **Codec**: Check if there are alternative codecs available that provide better quality at the same bitrate. While H.264 is a widely supported codec, newer codecs like H.265 (HEVC) may offer better compression efficiency and quality. However, make sure that the target devices and browsers support the chosen codec.

4. **Frame Rate**: Ensure that the frame rate of your videos matches the desired output frame rate. If the output frame rate is lower than the input frame rate, it can result in a loss of smoothness. Consider adjusting the frame rate before applying the Smart Crop Video preset.

5. **Smart Crop settings**: Review the Smart Crop settings being used. Adjust the crop area and aspect ratio to ensure that the important content of the video is preserved. Fine-tuning the crop settings can help minimize the loss of relevant details.

It's important to note that some loss of quality is expected when applying any form of video compression or cropping. However, by adjusting these settings, you can optimize the output quality to meet your requirements.

Hi @HrishikeshKa,

thanks for your reply:).

Are there these 2 features available for the video player?

1. Playback speed
2. Quality of the video - customer selecting resolution

Adobe use these 2 feuatures itself. or is that solved with youtube?

Hi @RobinBl1 ,

Yes, both playback speed and video quality selection are available features in the AEM video player.

1. **Playback speed**: The AEM video player supports playback speed adjustment, allowing users to speed up or slow down the playback of the video. This feature can be enabled by adding the `playbackRateControls` property to the video player configuration.

2. **Video quality selection**: The AEM video player also supports video quality selection, allowing users to choose the desired resolution of the video. This feature can be enabled by configuring the video player to use adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR) and providing multiple video quality options.

These features are not specific to YouTube and can be implemented in any video player. Adobe provides documentation and resources for implementing these features in the AEM video player.
