Google analytics's offer the ability to see how many people are on a website at any one time. See https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/reporting/realtime/v3/
This looks like it would be a really useful feature so that we can see how external advertising such as email marketing, social media, viral activity and TV advertisement spots are affecting our current live web traffic at any one time.
Am I missing something on Site Catalyst that will allow me to do this? Surely Google Analytics is not offering something that Omniture cannot offer?

Craig,
Real time reporting is available via the API. Jan Exner has a great blog post describing how the API can be used for real time reporting here:
http://webanalyticsfordevelopers.com/2013/09/10/real-time-reports-via-the-reporting-api/
Full information about the method for accessing real time reports is available on the Developer Connection:

Omniture provide more robust data as compare to google analytics. But in term of UI interface Google Analytics is much easier than Omniture.
I believe you need to use report builder and create data block with segment which you require. To get real time data you need to refresh those data blocks.

You can go to Site Content | Visitors | Hourly Unique Visitors for the current day, and turn on Current Data. The latest hour will give you a solid idea on how many visitors are currently on your site.

Just as a follow up on this topic, Real Time Reports are now available within the Reports & Analytics UI in Adobe Analytics. You can configure three different real time reports, each with three dimensions for breakdowns. So, if you use the metric of "instances" for example, to see how many users are on your site at any given time, you could use the breakdown variables of Page (to see which pages are being viewed), Geolocation State (to see where visitors are coming from) and Referrer (to see where traffic came from.)
You are limited to three configured reports at any given time, but you definitely can switch the reports on the fly -- just note that if you change your reports (that is, switching one of the three configured real time reports) it can take a few minutes to populate data in the new report.
