Context

  • Changes were made to our Marketing Channel Processing Rules a few years ago
  • Referring Domains was included in that change. Please take a look at the attached Marketing_Channel_Processing_Rules.JPG file

Issue

  • There is a significant amount of Typed/Bookmarked activity under Referring Domains. See workspace2.JPG file

Request
We need some help understanding why this is happening and any Marketing Channel Processing Rules configuration updates we need to make.

Thanks!

what do you see if you do a break down by marketing channel detail instead of referrer?

Cheers from Switzerland!

Thanks @bjoern__koth, I'll check that thread.

When breaking down Referring Domain by Marketing Channel Detail, I see almost half of the activity comes from an internal domain. It's worth noting that it comes in our pagename form. Please see attached screenshot.

It would help if we could see all your Marketing Channel Rules.. you can have multiple rules sending traffic to the same Channel, with different details.

@icontre1 Referring Domain overrides the last-touch channel in marketing channel processing rules. As a result, if a user came to your site via referring domains in previous visits and enters directly in the present visit, the marketing channel will be referring domain as it overrides the direct entry which is typed/bookmarked.

Keep in mind that your Marketing Channels have a default 30 day attribution (that number may vary depending on your settings), but Direct Traffic will not overwrite a specific Marketing Channel.

So for instance:

Visit 1 (Referral from domain.com)

  • Marketing Channel set to "Referring Domain"
  • Marketing Channel Detail set to "domain.com"
  • Referring Domain set to "domain.com" / Referrer Type is "other website"

Visit 2 (Direct)

  • Marketing Channel remains "Referring Domain" (Direct will not override a specific channel)
  • Marketing Channel Detail remains "domain.com" (again, same logic)
  • Referring Domain set to "" / Referrer Type is "typed/bookmarked"

If you are looking at Visit 2, your "Referrer" Data conflicts with your "Marketing Channel" Data because they have different attribution.. one is Visit level, the other is 30 days (and of course, the added logic to not let Direct traffic override your channels):

This is expected behaviour, because Marketing Channels is a different type of report to Marketing Channels (which use more than referrers to determine the classifications, and again has a different attribution)
