This works as expected on the production instance too, I just tried.Can you create a new user and assign Dam user and try again on prod , should work fine.

I don't think you can render the asset directly. You would need a renderer that can use this asset URL to render.

What is the size you are referring to ? Did you try uploading the same assets directly in AEM - did you encounter any issues.
