Also forgot to mention, we pull images from dynamic media. So i think as long as we have image cached in DM, we cannot return 404 selectively.

I think , asset need not be republished because the scheduler that deactivates the expired assets runs from author instance and this scheduler will pick up the updated expiry date in author.
