I have the solution for this for anyone searching: Create a HierarchyPage class in Java that extends HierarchyNodeExporter and ContainerExporterModify the methods that create::children > path name:children > path name > :path  to make the model match the shortened url. Then the model will load. 

Thanks @milind_bachani for setting me in the right direction. Do you know if this is a JS model under aem-spa-page-model-manager that needs overridden to update the children or a Java model?

We have a React component that returns data from the DAM based on the category Tag assigned to it. Is there a way to pass an attribute from React to the sling model and update the model.json with category data to display in React? Or will we have to keep using servlets to achieve this?
