We are considering a feature very similar to this that would satisfy all of the use cases you described.

Agreed. We need to make it easier to get this information.

This is something we are specifically targeting in the new Analysis Workspace, which will feature a "builder" that will allow you to configure most or all of these things up front, before querying.
