Connected assets - Without AMS

Hello Guys , 

I tried to verify the functionality of Connected assets in AEM on my local system. It worked as expected . 

However the documentation here clearly says that the Assets instance should be on AMS.

Hence my question is do we have a restriction that the assets should be hosted on the AMS only -OR- is it possible to have an on-premise Assets and sites instance ?
