Attribution Panel - Filtering with Segments, Calculated Metrics

Hi community,

I've been dabbling with the Attribution panel in CJA to solve some analytics use cases. I was wondering, what exactly happens when you filter the Attribution Success Metric (my Success metric is a Session scope metric) within the freeform table, by an Event level or Session level segment on top? Wondering if placing it over the metric either 1) filters the type of events or Sessions included in the Success metric component, or 2) if it actually filters the Dimension items within the attribution freeform? Couldn't seem to find this detail in the CJA documentation (if anyone has any docs other than Attribution Panel | Adobe Customer Journey Analytics let me know!!)

The example here is, I am trying to attribute Web pages to an application submission event online, and the Success metric is the submit page of that flow. The metric I've selected in the Attribution panel for app submissions is not product specific, and was wondering if I could place a filter on the metric using an additional segment or dimension e.g. product Name, to exclude irrelevant products from that metric?

Another question on Attribution panel.....is there really no way to use custom Calculated metrics as the Success metric within the panel? There are several use cases where analysts want to run through attribution exercises using their own customized fields, but it seems that only Metrics added within the Data View are available to use as Success metric in the Attribution Panel.

Hi @JaniceAk,

Q1:what exactly happens when you filter the Attribution Success Metric (my Success metric is a Session scope metric) within the freeform table, by an Event level or Session level segment on top?

A1: Placing a segment on top of the Success Metric in the freeform table filters the events or sessions included in the Success Metric calculation (not the dimension items themselves).

Q2: Can you use Calculated Metrics as Success Metrics in the Attribution Panel?
A2: No, currently Calculated Metrics (even session-scoped) are not supported as Success Metrics within the Attribution Panel.

Hope this helps,
Dan

Hi @JaniceAk ,

When you place a segment on top of the Success Metric, it filters the scope of the Success Events being attributed, not the dimension items.

Does segment on metric filter Success Events?

Yes — filters what gets attributed

Does it filter dimension items in rows?

No

Can you use segment to exclude irrelevant product submissions?

Yes — ideal use case

Can you use calculated metrics as Success metric?

No — only Data View metrics are allowed

Workaround?

Apply logic as segment or request DV metric

If you really need to use a calculated metric as a Success metric, try this workaround:

  1. Simulate your calculated logic as a Segment.

  2. Apply that segment on top of the Success metric as a filter, as you've already been doing.

  3. If possible, request an admin to add your custom logic as a new metric inside the Data View (e.g., “Product A Submissions”).

It filters the data feeding the Success metric itself, not the dimension items shown in the Attribution panel. So yes — your Option 1 is correct.
Q2) No — only base metrics defined in the Data View are allowed as Success metrics in the Attribution panel. This is a current limitation.

To troubleshoot what’s actually happening when applying filters, you can compare:

Attribution panel results with/without the segment applied to the metric.

Results in a standard freeform table using the same metric/segment combination.

To avoid false attribution, always ensure the success metric is clean and filtered for only the relevant outcomes before attribution begins.

Hi @JaniceAk

Q1: Applying an Event- or Session-level segment directly to the Success Metric in the Attribution panel filters the underlying success events that are eligible for attribution. it does not filter the dimension items in your rows. So yes, it’s essentially Option 1. This means you can absolutely use a segment (e.g., by product name) to exclude irrelevant submissions from being counted toward your attribution results.

Q2: At the moment, calculated metrics can’t be used as the Success Metric in the Attribution panel only metrics defined in the Data View are available. If you need custom logic, the workaround is to replicate that logic as a segment and apply it to the metric, or ask your admin to add it as a dedicated metric in the Data View.

Hope that helps!
