Enhance Workspace to Include Month of Year for Line Graphs

Please enhance Adobe Workspace to allow for line graphs that display "Month of Year" on the X axis so multiple years can be plotted and compared by month.  Below is an example with dummy data.

This is the most common way to display time-series data for businesses with seasonal trends.

Thanks!

I really like this idea, here's the best representation of what you're looking for that I was able to come up with today:

In essence - leverage Time Ranges to create two columns in the table. Not as slick as yours, but hopefully it's helpful until we can create a visualization more akin to the one you've shared.

Thanks for the suggestion - are you wanting to just compare YoY data?  If so, you can use the standard "Month" dimension (as opposed to "Month of Year") and then put the previous year in a separate column, and combine them on the same chart.  You should be able to achieve what you have in your line chart within Workspace today.

If you want to combine the data together (ie, add Jan 2015 + Jan 2016 together and plot it), you can just use a single column with "Month of Year" like you have it.  But then you can only use a bar or stacked-bar chart.  I think a good feature request that you might be asking for is to allow you to use the line chart with the Month of Year dimension.  Is that what you are asking for?

Hi Brandon,

Thanks!  Based on my conversation with Client Care (Incident: 180102-000353), they said this was not possible to do with a line graph, only a bar graph.  Unfortunately bar graphs are really not designed for time-series data and make interpretation of multiple years by month difficult.

We typically look at 2 years + current in our line graphs, so that is why were are asking for Month of Year as a dimension for a line graph.  Is there a way to do 2 years + current easily?  As far as soft coded time frames go, I do not believe '2 years ago' is an option today.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Jackie,

Thanks for the extra detail.  So for the line graph - do you want two separate lines (one for each year) like you show in the above graph in this post?  Or are you wanting one line that would have the two values (Jan 2015 + Jan 2016) combined into a single point for each month?

Thanks.

Hi Brandon,

I am looking for separate lines for each year (like shown in the original post).  This is the most common way to view time-series data, so it would be great if we could just pull "year" onto the table as opposed to making custom timeframes.

Thanks!

Thanks so much for talking through this with me.  You are in luck because you can do this in Workspace today - select an entire year (ie, 2017), use the "Month" dimension down the left of the table (since that is what you want to show on the x-axis), drop your metric that you want to view on a column, and then right-click the column and select "Add Time Period Column", and select whatever you'd like to compare to (ie, 2016).  Then drop a line chart on the canvas and you should be good to go.  You can even rename the legend labels in the line chart if you'd like.

I just gave this a try and it looks awesome! If you're looking for a more granular view, you can use Week or Day instead of Month. When I used Day, the data was a lot more jumpy, so I ended up using a Moving Avg Calc Metric:

Nice Brandon!
