Why are task statuses not aligning with status columns in Kanban Boards?

We recently started using Kanban boards and I created new custom statuses for columns.
However, when you change a task status that task doesn't "move" - it often even remains in backlog.

When we used sprints those statuses were synonymous and reflected equally both ways no matter where you set them. Really messing up report/filter views etc

hey I wanted to just check and make sure that you had set up your settings? These appear to come in blank for me (which is a whole other conversation). If I'm remembering, I think once this is set up, the cards CAN move?? I'd have to play with it to be sure.

Hi Skye - unfortunately we are not using "boards" - so it's the actual kanban "team" backlog and columns. I do not see a way to set columns like you are showing - 

 I also have some people not seeing all the same status options in drop-downs.

I only have one "non-system wide" status group so it shouldn't be related to that.
