What is the role of Project Sponsor? Any articles/documentation?

Project Sponsor: This is the primary stakeholder for the project. This is usually an executive overseeing and championing the project, or it is the person with budgetary responsibility. This is all of the information that I could find on Project Sponsor. When would I put a person as a Project Sponsor? Why would I do that? What does this mean to be the Project Sponsor? In the email notifications settings - there are only 2 settings possible to turn on. Please give me some clarity on how to effectively use this field etc ...

The project Sponsor is just that - the primary stakeholder of the project. When you add a Project Sponsor, it shares the project with them, and they can get notified upon certain events (there are 9 possible events). You can do reporting against this field as well.

We use it for the contact of the project. that way people know who to contact for Q&A about the project. We don't need a sponsor on the projects. But sure would like a project Who's who page, for a list of people that may or may not be in Workfront.

We use the Project Sponsor field as the business partner that owns/requests the project. We find this is helpful for our Creative folks to easily find the person they should contact for questions or direction. The project sponsor field (for us) has the name of the executive who has the authority to spend as much money as we need in the project. That is the person who, at each tollgate review, says yes continue or stop, or change direction. The project sponsor is the person who signs off on the Charter. Hope this helps. Eric

Yes, it does help. It clarifies what that field is used for - or can be used for.
