Wanted to see pro's vs con's on creating one Portfolio vs creating many different Portfolios.

We started out by creating one portfolio and was putting everything under there for the ease of reporting, but as we have matured we are starting to create multiple portfolios, wondering what is better and any advantages, disadvantages on creating just one portfolio or having multiple portfolios.

It really depends on the business you're in. We are in healthcare information and education have a portfolio for each client/product we work with (mostly pharma). We use programs for multi-deliverable projects. This allows us to set permissions as well as report on each client and/or product individually. As well as provide Gantt charts per client/product collectively.

Hi Shawn,

I'm part of a vegetable breeding company, and we have recently reorganized all of our portfolios and programs.

Now, we capture all projects together in one portfolio that belongs to the same decision-making unit (project sponsor). And the programs serve different types of projects or specific themes within that portfolio.

We have yet to see if this ultimately works out well, but the reactions are positive so far.
