We're using SharePoint Online for documents and it's has some advantages and disadvantages. SharePoint Online is much better than the plain SharePoint implementation, if you can get it. Our main use cases are:
For compliance, to ensure company security protocols are maintained and assets can be centrally managed
For expanded file storage capacity, so we have virtually unlimited storage that is already paid for, so no additional fees
For enhanced file management, we can use local folder sync for project files and online shared documents for collaboration
Some disadvantages are:
Requires technical support for both setup and maintenance, best done by IS/IT pros
Can be finicky during everyday use, requires some additional steps for certain activities, such as when editing files and folders, etc.
Can be buggy, most of the big issues have been fixed with the latest updates but there are still occasional complications
Requires user training and support, depending on how tech-savvy your group is and how familiar they are with these tools
Overall, there have been some bumps in the road but the advantages make it worthwhile. As long as you have a good tech team to help with implementation, it's worth exploring the option. Cheers. Peyto Yellin CareOregon, Inc.
