Recommendations for visualizing product roadmap within Workfront

Avatar

Level 2

Hi all, we're working towards using a report within Workfront to visualize our product roadmap.

Right now we have all of our backlogged items are in WF as individual requests, grouped by the upcoming sprint we have them tentatively planned for. Does anyone have any suggestions on the most visual way within WF to display this?

We're open to switching our backlogged items to tasks as well, if that's best for our reporting.

Any insight on how other teams approach this is appreciated!

Hi @AbiBeggs
What should the "roadmap" show/visualize?

Generally 'Milestone' view would be great to the the high level roadmap of the PROJECTS. you can do this in the Projects area or create a report and check the 'Show the Milestone view' on the Report settings.

You can use 'Show Gantt chart view' on the Task type Report.

hi,

here is how i would do: Calendar view or Board View

Calendar view --> create calendar > go to project tab to choose which project holds all your queue > go to Issue tab to choose the group id to just an additional one, but ensure to choose issue status may be "backlog"

In the same calendar i would add another to show all new requests received for same queue.

Board View:

I would call the project queue in the board configure area and have a column set up to arrange for all "backlog" and "new" intakes received.

hope this helps.

thanks Sujatha

Hi @AbiBeggs,

Since you're open to converting your Product Roadmap to Tasks...

I invite you to consider several of our Calendaring solutions, with my favorite among them being our most recent Swimlane ADVANCED solution (now with Smart Connectors), as below. With the latter, in your Product Roadmap usecase, you could then:

  • create a Swimlane Report
  • add one or more Panels (for related Swimlanes), and within each Panel
  • define a colored Swimlane for each product (or Sprint, or Team, etc. -- any or all) of interest, and within each Swimlane
  • add the Tasks of interest as Swimlane Items within the Swimlane, and for each Swimlane Item
  • set the (optional) bar color, icon, label, and font color, and to emphasize key dependencies from any such Swimlane
  • add a Smart Connector to any other Swimlane item within the panel (even across Swimlanes), choosing either the default Smart Color logic, or a specific color of your choice

With the above in hand, you can then generate the Swimlane Report with a button click to see the current plan from right within Workfront, and as the underlying data changes in real time, see the effect on your Product Roadmap, in real time.

If this solution or any others are of interest, I'd be happy to chat further via doug.denhoed@atappstore.com

Regards,

Doug
