Consider using report prompts to narrow down the results of a report, rather than building multiple, similar reports or creating complicated filter structures in a report.
Report prompts are open filters that can be customized and applied different each time you run a report. For example, say you want to keep report filters the same, but see results for different time periods (this week, this month, this quarter, etc.). Instead of editing the filters each time, create custom prompts so that you can simply select the time frame from the dropdown when the report is run.
Rather than starting from scratch, build custom prompts using filters. For this example, let's build 3 custom prompts - Projects Completed This Week, This Month and this Quarter.
1. From the Reports area, select a project report.
2. Navigate to the Filters area and add Project > Actual Completion Date > This Week.
3. Switch to text mode. You should see three lines of text. At the end of the first two lines of text, add && signs. Then, using the backspace button, have all lines appear on a single line. It should look like this:
actualCompletionDate=$$TODAYbw&&actualCompletionDate_Mod=between&&actualCompletionDate_Range=$$TODAYew
4. Then, cut this text so you can paste it as a a custom prompt.
5. Go to Report Settings > Report Prompts > Custom Prompts. Name your custom prompt. Label this prompt, Completed This Week. Paste in your text mode where it says Condition. Save and close.
Now, when you run the report, any filters you added (for example within a certain portfolio, or owned by a certain user) will be applied, while the prompt will ask you to select a date range.
6. To add a custom prompt for Completed This Month, add this field as a filter, switch to text mode and add && signs to the end of the lines, make all lines appear on a single line and then cut and paste.
