Mass update to Duration Type?

Avatar

Level 2
Is there a way to mass update an entire project to a specific Duration Type? I ask because my Resource Leveling is no longer working and I am thinking one of the Tasks may have been set to Effort Driven. I know Resource Leveling is a delicate function, are there any other possible reasons Leveling is no longer working? Would 1 task set to Effort Driven cause all Leveling to no longer work or just not level the items that are Effort Driven? All of my tasks have a person and role assigned Only 1 person per task. Primary role set to 100% FTE set according to the hours each person is able to work. (.5 for 50% of a 40 hour a week schedule) Any help would be greatly appreciated! Michael Boyle Aetna International

Yes and Yes . Yes just one Task with Effort Driven will stop the Resource Leveling. But you can set a View to see all the Task Constraints on your Task List to verify if you have one and change it. And Yes you can also do a bulk edit on all your tasks by selecting them all (one check box at the top) and hit Edit and change the Duration. It'll change them all. Let me know if you need more detail on any of that. Thank you Vic, I found there was 1 item that was Effort Driven so that is now resolved and your View recommendation saved lots of time! The Leveling appears to be working but not taking into account the FTE availability. Is it possibly because some Tasks are assigned to a Role Group rather than an individual contributor? I know Leveling has an issue when there is more than 1 person but not sure if it is an issue if a Role Group is assigned as well. All tasks are Duration type - Simple Task Constraint - As Soon As Possible Using Predecessors One person per Task (some are assigned to a Role Group) Thank you for your assistance, Michael Boyle Aetna International

Maybe someone else or someone from WF can chime in here, but I believe the FTE availability won't affect the resource leveling ("by design" ). I don't think they've connected the two. I believe the FTE availability will only impact your capacity planning/scheduling. But I'd like to have someone else confirm that as I'm not sure if it's something I remember or something I'm assuming based on previous similar experiences in WF. Simple Duration is needed for Resource Leveling but does Simple Duration take into account FTE values (project and or individual level) or do I have to set each task "duration" in settings to reflect someone is less than 1 FTE? Scenario: Simple Duration on all Tasks Resource Leveling is working based on everyone being 1.0 FTE (even though many are less than 1.0 FTE) This is causing a Task that has 40 hours and a resource with .5 FTE display 5 days in duration which in turn has the Due On date occurring sooner than what the resource can actually work the task. This task should take 10 days due to them being a .5 FTE Any thoughts? Michael Boyle Aetna International

I'd be interested to hear people's answer on this as well, because my recollection in the past was we had to change the person's allocation % on each individual task itself. But a colleague yesterday seemed to think he saw a way to set the person's allocation % for the entire project somewhere. But I can't find it. And it might be a new feature, but again I can't find information indicating that's possible. According to the tool tip for FTE on the user setup page, "You must calculate resource availability using the Default Schedule to use this value." I'm not sure exactly what that means, but it sounds like it might explain unexpected calculations around FTE. Remember that you can now allocate a percentage to each of a resource's roles. You could create a custom "FTE" by allocating a resource 10% to the role of "Unavailable," a role that you would never, ever assign to a task. I tried this (changed the task Duration Type to Calculated Assignment) and saved my changes, but when I go back and look at the Task Details it still says "Simple" for the task Duration Type. What am I doing wrong? Lindsey Phelps Carilion Clinic

One thing I can think off…is the task(s) assigned to an agile team? If yes, then by default the task duration type is set to Simple (and per Workfront this is automatic and cannot be changed.) Terry Hynd EBSCO Information Services
