I think you'll have a much harder time getting task information into a project report than the other way around. Based on what I understand you're wanting to see, your best bet is probably to use your task report and group by project name - that way you could at least collapse the results by project on the details list and basically see the list of projects that have any past-due tasks. And of course you could additionally group those by Project Owner, Project Manager, etc.
I don't know of an easy way to get Workfront to give you a specific "project count" on the list of projects in the report (because it's a task report), but if you made a chart and did a record count by project manager (or whatever other grouping you created), you could see a visual that could maybe give you an easier way to count the number of projects. In the screenshot below, I've grouped these tasks in the task report by project owner and by project. The record count on the bottom axis is technically showing the number of tasks that are past due, but because they are grouped by project name, I can add the project count up in my head pretty easily if needed.
