Export Project data to XML

Avatar

I was wondering if anybody was willing to share the steps to export project data to XML?  I'm the admin but not a developer so when I reviewed EL, it appeared a bit over my head.  I DID, manually export a project to Microsoft Project (which is EML for Project from what I read), but when I imported into Excel it only brought in one row and not all the task data.

Any help would be appreciated before I ping Support

Can you share what you're trying to accomplish? I'm just curious about why you're choosing to export an XML and then open it in excel. What are you trying to get? Why would you not open the XML in microsoft project, or why would you not export the excel of the project instead, as a kickstart (or some other way)?

Great question.  Our org does not use MS Project.  We have users who want to take their project via XML data and import/open into Excel so they can slice and dice the data (they were used to doing this from Smartsheet before we changed to Workfront).  They would love it to be automated so they can always manipulate in Excel (TBD).  I did try to export a project via MS Project (which I read is XML), but when I did it only provided the project info (one line in Excel) and not all the tasks.

Any guidance would be appreciated!

Thanks

smartsheet is a closer equivalent to excel for sure. Would they be willing to show you what they were doing in smartsheet? I just feel like this is on you to create an equivalent view in workfront that they can export as an excel file and we could maybe leave xml out of this. I mean, I don't know smartsheet very well so not sure what they are doing, but that's my hope.

Thank you, Skye I will ask.  The question they will ask me is can this be automated so it can be run/exported automatically and update what is in Excel OR will they just have to do a scheduled report and open every time?

Hi Skye --I did ask the user and appears to be able to use an XLS format (via a report) but the use case is they want the report to be run automatically (in intervals like a scheduled delivery) AND saved in a shared folder (not sent via e-mail).  I did not see this in EL, am I missing it/this ability?

That isn’t how Workfront works. I asked chatGPT and it had a number of options including a Power Automate option and something from Make. So I would encourage you to work with that (emailing the file and using an external automation to store it in your folder), or Fusion which is Adobe’s automation tool.

@DavidKr9 just checking in! Were you able to get this resolved? If one of the replies above helped—whether it completely solved the issue or simply pointed you in the right direction—marking it as accepted can make it much easier for others with the same question to find a solution. And if you found a different way to fix it, sharing your approach would be a great contribution to the community. Your follow-up not only helps close the loop but also ensures others benefit from your experience. Thanks so much for being part of the conversation!
