Hi Karen - if you are looking at just a single project, you can always export the Utilization report on the project and just hide the other columns besides Planned Hours.
If you are looking across multiple projects (or if you want something different for a single project), my recommendation is an Assignment report. It creates a separate line item for every single assignment on a task or issue so you can easily group by role or employee. It is my favorite reporting object :)
You can then either default the groupings as collapsed or you can default to the Summary tab so you can see in one page the total hours by role.
