Task list editing frustrations

Improve the general functionality for editing the task list -

1. Show ALL tasks when the project is opened, not just the first 100

2. Return back to the task line after saving 'Edit Task', instead of the project heading.

3. Ability to leave blank task lines for editing later or creating visual breaks between Parent task groups.

4. Undo button to correct deletions

5. Improved 'indenting' when adding parent or child tasks. Current functionality can be confusing and frustrating compared to MS Project.

Yes I found it interesting that the indent buttons are reversed compared to MS Project. Took me a few mistakes to realize what my old habits were doing!

Expanding on this:

1. Create an option to switch between standard pagination and "smart pagination". Smart pagination would create page breaks based on top level tasks. For example, I might have a top level task named "Phase 5: Production Release". The pagination system would try to keep all the tasks from this parent task together in the same page. In fact, if the pagination simply created a page for each top level task I would instantly have a page per phase of the project.

2. Create some sort of quick preview when you roll over the page number so you have an idea of what tasks are on that page.

Overall if users are not constantly switching to "view all" I would imagine it would have a positive performance impact on your servers. Right now when I click "show all" immediately upon opening the project you are in effect dealing with two project loads every time I look at anything.

Items 2, 4 and 5 would be of GREAT interest to us! Number 2 especially. It is incredibly frustrating to dive into a task and then have to go back to PAGE 1 of the project, at the top of the page.

Agree on all, especially an Undo button. It would be nice to undo any task changes - maybe if there could be a draft mode where you could change things around until you were ready, then click save when ready to adjust?

Agree!

In particular, an Undo option as well as improved indenting/outdenting would be greatly appreciated!

My team and I have significant issues with indenting. Just when you think you're indenting or dropping something to indent in the right spot, it messes up the hierarchy in a different way you weren't expecting. Here's where undo would also help!

Also, having a hierarchy with multiple levels of Subtasks in the subtask tab within a task would be fantastic.

Hey, everyone!

Thanks for commenting and voting on this. I’m going to mark this idea as planned, as we’re already working or considering most of the points in this post. Please find my comments below:

  1. Show ALL tasks when the project is opened, not just the first 100 - As you might’ve noticed, projects list in Production already loads up to 2000 items on a single page by default. The same change will be applied to tasks list soon.
  2. Return back to the task line after saving 'Edit Task', instead of the project heading - This is something that we consider as a future work, but don’t have any ETA for now.
  3. Ability to leave blank task lines for editing later or creating visual breaks between Parent task groups - At this point we don’t have any plans to support this functionality.
  4. Undo button to correct deletions - Glad to inform that this is currently being worked on, so very soon you should be able to undo/redo your actions on task lists.
  5. Improved 'indenting' when adding parent or child tasks. Current functionality can be confusing and frustrating compared to MS Project - in terms of improving task indentation we’re going to change the hierarchy view to show sibling tasks on the same level, regardless if they have child tasks or not.

Thanks again!

Hey, all,

I'd like to provide an update on items in this post:

Following ideas are delivered with 19.1 release:

  • Show ALL tasks when the project is opened, not just the first 100 - This is already available in Tasks lists in Production. Now you can see up to 2000 items by default.
  • Undo button to correct deletions -We have added the Undo functionality in Gantt. We also consider having it on the list directly in the future.

These ones are not planned at the moment:

  • Return back to the task line after saving 'Edit Task', instead of the project heading - This is on our list of future improvements but not assigned to a release.
  • Ability to leave blank task lines for editing later or creating visual breaks between Parent task groups - At this point we don’t have any plans to support this functionality.
  • Improved 'indenting' when adding parent or child tasks. Current functionality can be confusing and frustrating compared to MS Project - We don't have plans to change the order of Indent/Outdent buttons at the moment. Regarding how the parent/child tasks are displayed in the list, we've made some UI changes to allow you better differentiate between tasks of the same level and children tasks.

As this post contains several ideas, and we've implemented part of those, I'll mark this as Delivered. Please log new idea entries for each of other topics in case you'd like us to still consider them in the future.

Thanks!
