Better Error Messages for Kick-Starts

Description - More descriptive error messages that actually tell you specifically what failed, where, and how to resolve it.

Why is this feature important to you - We use the kick-start feature several times a year to mass upload projects, tasks, etc.

How would you like the feature to work - The error messages should be very descriptive and explain what is needed to correct the issue.

Current Behaviour - Currently the error messages are very vague. The one good thing is that they tell you where it failed, which helps. But it if so often unclear why it failed or how to correct it. By far, the one area that gets me the most is anytime I try to upload text into a text field. It fails left and right and I don't know why. Sometimes doing something like changing a single character or copying and pasting the text again will resolve it. It seems very random, but it does not work.

Hi @Cameron_Ward,

I invite you to consider our Excel Updater solution, which, during its "Test" step, provides extremely specific error messaging by both citing each cell that failed (and the reason), and by providing a spreadsheet that highlights all such errors (with the corresponding comment on each cell).

Doug

Hi @cbward90,

Doug D's stuff is great.

The use of the Excel Updater can save you countless hours of debugging while wondering around the error messages the kick-starts provide. And, it provides a design alternative to a simple question like, "how can I update and insert project expenses to my 500+ projects from an accounting system Excel export that happens monthly?"
