Hi,you can write a servlet which can be exposed as an API.In your servlet, you can get the same json object but return only ‘hits’ object as the response

Though it's not AEM's strength, I think we can use some of the UI frameworks which enables the drag and drop features to create a template in AEM. Now list all the widgets(AEM Components) which users can organize within the layout.
