I use this similar approach to have tasks show up in a certain order on a dashboard report. Assigning the custom field with a number, I then sort on that field.

With the field validation, I would like to also be able to enter "other data" within rules. Example, for a date field, I would like the ability to enter NA text to indicate the date isn't required. Right now we have to leave it blank. The same would go for numbers.
