We will soon be adding MathTool support to the Velocity template and then it can be utilized. JIRA (Ref.DXML-13381) has been logged to address this requirement.

This seems to be reproducible on the Assets UI (on-prem)version. We suggest creating a support ticket under AEM Assets for more insights and resolution for this.
