I test the use case locally, but unable to recreate the same. To the best of my knowledge, I don't think disabling rewriting/checking can cause this issue with thumbnail. Can you upload a new asset into DAM, and see if it generates the thumbnail fine? What errors do you see in AEM error.log file for...

This can be done by just removing permissions of that component for those particular users, you can do groups segregation and add users on those groups ,which has permission to access those components. 

It seems that you do not have sufficient permission to perform this activity. I see the below message which says that to perform this operation, one should have required privileges and should be part of editor group atleast. Please make yourself part of editor group and test the use case again. Let ...

What is the exact AEM patch wherein you are testing this? Can you post the JS error coming in console?
