@CraigJ2 Assuming you can open the Designer standalone, can you capture WB logs by running it from the command line: workbench.exe -debug -console. You have to run this command from the WB installation under program files.These logs may point to the actual cause of the issue.

@nj2 Are you still getting this issue?Are there any particular error msgs in the logs while fetching the Datasources? What is the data source service type that you're setting up?
