I have import org.apache.felix.scr.annotations.Reference;import org.apache.sling.xss.XSSAPI; and @Referenceprivate XSSAPI xssapi;   but when I try to use the xssapi variable, it's null.  

I've been wondering if it is possible to separate content from code in such a way that we can containerize the AEM instance with just code (OSGi bundles, templates, components, clientlibraries, etc.) that can be used to quickly spin-up a new (Publisher) instance - or to prepare the next code release...

I did not overcome the issue; for pages we're using an HTTP request in stead of the requestResponseFactory solution.
