I have created a recommendation based on top-seller products across site criteria but it is not working I am not getting any data. do I need to provide any additional information to target for this algorithm to run?

I just want to know how Target knows the purchase history of any products Do we need to pass anything or does it take from analytics or do we need to set up an Order Confirmation mbox?

I am using "Trending Products " as base criteria here some time I am getting products from 3 or 4 categories. i am not getting products across all the category each time. how do i make sure that i am getting at least one product from each category every time from algorithm.
