Adobe as introduced Federated Audience Composition, where you can Create, configure, test and save the connection to your external database.
From their you can Add and configure activities (Split, Enrichment, Query, etc.) to build compositions and create your audience from external database.

You have multiple datasources ootb with AJO.

if you need specific data only I will recommend to create and manage a view on your end and give AJO access to this view.

ulrimately, you can use sftp approach to load data into AJO.

I’m not suggesting FAC for now because it’s an add-on and it may not available if you have privacy and security shield
