Click and page view goals scope only within Page delivery?

I can't see anywhere clear when are we exactly tracking the click and page view goals: only within the Page delivery url(s)? Or anywhere on the domain?

Ex:

- page delivery is https://www.example.com/en-gb.html

- Goals:

-- track clicks on element "body > #my-element"

-- track page views for https://www.example.com/en-gb/directory.html

Questions:

1. Would this example track clicks on element "body > #my-element" only from page https://www.example.com/en-gb.html, or also any other page from the domain like https://www.example.com/en-gb/action2.html ?

2. Would the page view track visiting https://www.example.com/en-gb/directory.html only after being at https://www.example.com/en-gb.html or also in any other situation like https://www.example.com/en-gb.html --> https://www.example.com/en-gb/sample23.html --> https://www.example.com/en-gb/directory.html

3. Would the page view track if the user directly visits page https://www.example.com/en-gb/directory.html without visiting https://www.example.com/en-gb.html at all?

I'll start by getting off topic for a bit: Are you using Adobe Analytics or Customer Journey Analytics in addition to Target?

Related to the actual question:

  1. Once the visitor is included in the Activity, Target collects data and matches them to URLs outside of the delivery URLs as well, this applies to all actions, as long as Target is loaded and sends data properly from that page.
  2. If the visitor (or browser) hasn't been included in the Activity, their data is not collected to it. Once they're included, data is collected regardless of pathing.
  3. Tracking is only activated once Target includes the browser in the Activity. This is because data collection is per activity.

I did a short test and seems like Page views are tracked outside of the delivery URLs but not element clicks. Is this correct? This doesn't seem to align to your explanation, which concludes element click tracking would also be tracked outside delivery URLs.

I find this inconsistent behaviour quite confusing, but also would be very bizarre if click tracking would be done outside delivery URLs... in that case, what would be the "outside" scope? Domain? Page delivery folder & childs? All the domains that run Adobe Target in the project?

You are right and Target needs to include the URL, but it can be done outside of pages where actual Activity changes are done.

You can find more info here, look into e.g. notes about Target click tracking canceling other events: https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/target/using/activities/success-metrics/click-tracking
