Dynamically populate fields based on a static entry

Hello all, as you will be able to tell by my question I am a complete newbie.

Here is what I am trying to do.  I have a text field that I was the user to type something into, in this case a unique identifier for users.  Once they fill in this text field I want a bunch of other fields dynamically filled in from a database connection.  So for example first and last name.  I also want these other fields to be uneditable to the user.  They can type in the one field and all the other fields I want to be auto populated.  I know it's probably not difficult but I can't find anything related to my situation.
