Layout changes when filled-out form is reopened

I have designed a form in ES8.2 where the presence of several subforms and fields are determined by selections in drop downs and option groups. The presence setting is driven by javascript on the change events of these fields, and it all works just fine when the user is initially completing the form. The problem I am having is when a user fills out the form and saves or submits it, the presence settings are lost when the filled-out form is reopened. How can I make the form layout look the same when it is reopened as it did when it was saved?

In Acrobat 9 there was a setting added to allow the saving of the state of the form. In Designer have a look at File/Form Porperties/Defaults Tab and make sure that the automatically option is chosen.
