Custom Validation Messages

I am trying to create a custom error message on a text field, but no matter what I do the default message alwats appears. Here is what I did: I highlighted the text field, under the Object tab, Value tab, I made sure the User Entered is required, the Validation Pattern is 9999 (because the input I am requiring is a four digit number), under Validation Pattern message I typed my message, and checked the error box, on the Field tab under Display Pattern I entered 9999 identical to the Validation Pattern. I believed I followed the directions but still get the default message. Can anyone help?

Here's an article I found helpful for my case. It may be a bit overkill for what you're doing, but it does allow you to create custom messages and avoid using the default message.
