Can view data as XML but NOT in Excel

After importing data into a data set it appears correctly in Acrobat. But going to [Manage Form Data: Merge Data Files into Spreadsheet] and opening the resulting spreadsheet I see only the data set name and the field headings, no data. Exporting the data to XML and then opening the XML file with excel does correctly show the data. Can anyone suggest what is going on.
