File Storage vs S3 storage

Avatar

Former Community Member

Hello All,

I have been exploring S3 vs File system for storage assets. Our asset size is approx a 1TB and i have been tasked with finding out if we should use File system storage vs S3. The assets would mostly be static and have some workflows associated with them that move them around based on business rules.

I am keen to use S3 but there is an opinion that taking a snapshot of disk is fast and can be done easily while for S3 taking a snapshot is like copying the binaries to particular location etc.

Any opinions are appreciated.

Hi

With so many options available, it is difficult to pinpoint the perfect data management solution. The best way to do so is to evaluate each company’s needs. If collaboration and file sharing is of utmost importance, then a Cloud service is recommended. If data security is paramount, then a centralized network is probably the best option.

Local Storage – A quick recap

Local storage refers to data which is saved directly onto a user’s computer, a server or local storage system. Generally the comfort zone for many, this type of data storage has been the norm for a while and will be the default for a majority of businesses.

The options of local storage includes flash drives, optical drives such as DVD’s and CD’s, hard drives, servers.

Local Storage Pros

Security in the sense your data is controlled internally by your own IT staff and not available anywhere outside of it

Locally based servers can sometimes mean faster access to data such as files and documents

Your data storage, when local, is tangible and physical. There’s no worries over cloud-storage failure and you have the sole control and responsibility of your data

No essential reliance on an internet connection

Local servers can sometimes prove a cheaper option

Cloud Storage Pros

As your data is being stored elsewhere on the cloud, local issues such as computer crashes, damage or theft aren’t an issue

If it’s something you’ve been interested in, cloud storage allows a real opportunity for remote working. Wherever you or your employees are, data is can be both saved and accessed

As a slight further point on the above, the easier access of data can makes the potential of global collaboration completely possible

Without needing to power local storage, there will be maintenance cost savings

Expansion can be increased quickly and in-line with your exact requirements. No longer will you be limited to the size of your personal local storage

What do i think?

Although we understand different solutions fit different circumstances we’re big advocates for cloud storage. The industry in general is moving away from physical drives due to both the convenience and flexibility of storing essential data online on the cloud. It prevents a range of issues including local hard drive or server crashes and it means, wherever you or your colleagues are in the world, you have safe, secure access to data.

Hi Samthadhani,

In my view, If assets are too big, S3 storage would be a good solution as compared to traditional file system. Though S3 storage has his won cons & prons. Here is the article for more details
